Do you know the difference between on-grid and off-grid? Apr 25, 2024

On-grid power generation system

It consists of components, grid-connected inverter, photovoltaic meter, load, two-way meter, grid-connected cabinet and power grid.

The direct current generated by sunlight is converted into alternating current through the inverter, and then supplied to the load and connected to the grid. It can be directly used for household loads, and excess electricity can be sold into the grid. However, grid-connected inverters generally have a two-pole structure of boost and inverter.

Off-grid power generation system

It consists of photovoltaic modules, solar controllers, inverters, batteries, loads, etc. It does not rely on the power grid and operates independently. It is generally used in remote areas, areas without electricity, islands, communication base stations and street lights.

When there is light, the solar energy is converted into electrical energy, and the integrated solar controller supplies power to the load and charges the battery; when there is no light, the battery power can be used to power the AC load through the inverter. The cost of its battery accounts for 30%-50% of the off-grid power generation system. Off-grid inverters generally have a four-level structure of controller, boost, inverter and isolation.

Hybrid energy storage system

It is composed of photovoltaic modules, solar and off-grid all-in-one machine, battery, load, etc. It is widely used in scenarios where there are frequent power outages or when photovoltaic power cannot be used for self-use and is not available for the grid. The price of self-consumption electricity is more expensive than the grid electricity price, and the peak electricity price is more expensive than the trough electricity price.

The photovoltaic array converts solar energy into electrical energy when there is light, and the solar controller and inverter all-in-one machine supplies power to the load and charges the battery at the same time; when there is no light, the battery supplies power to the solar controller and inverter all-in-one machine. Then power the AC load function. Dual mode switching to ensure power supply needs.

The photovoltaic on-grid system relies on the power grid and adopts the working mode of "self-use for self-use and grid-connection of surplus electricity" or "full grid-connection", while the off-grid system does not rely on the power grid and relies on "storage and use at the same time" or "store first and then use". working mode.

From a comprehensive perspective of composition, cost, and efficiency, the cost of photovoltaic off-grid systems is relatively high, and the surplus electricity cannot be stored. Therefore, it is highly practical in areas without electricity or areas with frequent power outages.
